Språkkompisen – when dialogue is key

Språkkompis helps us practise real dialogue in the classroom and there are no other tools for that – and the students love it.
Language teacher, Swedish For Immigrants (SFI) School

The Language Buddy is a flexible tool that drives more spoken Swedish by adapting to the students’ needs and always helps you through the exercise, no matter how hard pronunciation might be.

Situational dialogue drives confidence and results

The dialogues are focused on specific situations and activities. The user learns to navigate the situation which provides confidence in this certain area by making it possible to practice a certain dialogue and explore related questions and words as many times as wanted.

Use Språkkompis in a classroom, together as a group or for individual practice. A digital companion that does not grow tired of trying out a sentence again and again.

Watch José use Språkkompisen to learn words in the grocery store, talk to the cashier and handle an erroneous receipt:

Instead of translating single words to reach understanding, the Language Buddy gives you an incentive to ask about what you do not understand and coaches you to the right answer. The more you explore the content – the more you can learn.

A dialogue engine for learning like humans do

The dialogue engine, called TDM, makes sure the students stay on the pedagogical path that the dialogue writer has designed; asking questions or going off-track is handled with patience and the dialogue is then returned to the question at hand.

A sample of features that make Språkkompis your buddy in learning a language:

  • Context-based help – get adaptive help on the task you are working with right now
  • Pronunciation read-back and anchoring of your answers
  • Different levels of help – through speech and images – that finds the right level of challenge for the individual

Tested on all courses in SFI in Sweden

Språkkompis has been tested on all courses in SFI, from LärVux to the last course of study track 3. Not only are the different difficulty levels helping but flexible interpretation of answers provides students on different levels the possibility to answer in short or more lengthy to test one’s abilities. Changing settings like reading pace and pauses in a user interface also helps adapting the teacher-written content to the right target student groups. Even images, video and other graphical pedagogical means can be fitted to dialogue after the dialogue creator’s wishes due to the flexible nature of TDM.
